I am enjoying the US Open today and I was extremely impressed with the way that Phil Mickelson played his round of golf. He shot an amazing round of -5 under par, to finish day two at -1 par. The man he is chasing after for the number a single world ranking, Tiger Woods, did not have anywhere as extraordinary a round, but still played good and shot a round of +1, to finish his second round at +4. It will probably be very a tournament over the remaing two days, and I wonder if Tiger can restore his form and capture his 15 major championship or will this be Phil Mickelson's time to finally win a US Open- I guess we will have to wait and see how this will conclude. On a side note, once again, Ian Poulter had on a rather one-of-a-kind pair of golf trousers. He is without a doubt one of golf's most pleasurable personalities.

Great insight Jim. We appreciate you taking the time to offer such thoughtful comments. The joint efforts between MLS and its marketing art, SUM (Soccer United Marketing) has yielded some results. Agree wholeheartedly with your comments regarding markets. Seattle is a very hot market and there is good ownership in place. Of course some great sports owners are heavily invested in MLS, such as Phil Anschutz and Stan Kroenke. Kroenke's empire of course is owner of Aresenal FC. So, definitely lots of good going on.

The key, as you point out, is expectation. Sports leagues don't all have to be the NFL here. In fact, none will. Fill a need, deliver for an audience, and work to grow that audience in a steady way. Nothing wrong with that formula. Of course, you also need to make sure your labor costs don't get out of hand.

MLS is a very interesting subject. When you think about it, they are really trying to accomplish multiple objectives at the same time - raise the profile of soccer in the US, provide a proving ground and development system for homegrown talent, and (last but not least) run a profitable professional sports league. Although they stumbled a bit out of the gate, they are making a lot of great moves currently. The most important thing is that they are putting franchises in markets where the fans actually care. Toronto and Seattle are great examples, and the Portland and Vancouver expansion cities are great choices. Also, getting smaller soccer-only stadiums in larger markets like LA, NY and Chicago will help build the fan base as well (although I wish they had been built in actual cities instead of the burbs, but soccer in the US is a wealthy suburban sport for the most part).
From a quality standpoint, though, I think the best we can hope for in the near term is that MLS becomes a stable quality second tier league. Our best players will have to go to the EPL, Bundesliga, Serie A, etc. to develop into the type of talent that can help the national team compete on the world stage. Look what Landon Donovan's stint at Everton did for his confidence - he is the same player today that he was a year ago talent wise, but now he knows that he can excel at the highest level of world football. His goal aganst Slovenia today was brilliant, confident and daring. I wonder if he would have taken that shot a year ago...

As a sales manager for a pharmaaceutical company in So. Calif., I hired a iyong man named , Cliff Brandon, who played for Wooden at UCLA. It was obvious that Wooden not only had an eye for basketball talent, he had an eye for character.

I'm too young to have seen or remember John Wooden work the sidelines, but as a big sports fan, it's hard not to admire and respect all that he has accomplished and given to the game.

I would be curious to know something - if this year was a 96 team tourney, who would the extra teams have been and what was their combined total record? Was it over .500?

Like most things these days, this decision isnt being made in the interest of the game of basketball, or the student/athletes, or anything else besides the almighty buck.

However, people will watch, it will be fun, and a few years from now we wont ever remember this argument. It does make the arguments against a football playoff seem even sillier in comparison.

Just what we needed - something to make us watch more TV...

We discussed BP in my Media & Society class, not on this subject of course. BP has been committing this crime of relying on the way they dress up their brand for a long time. I believe that some people don't even know what BP is because they have greenwashed their product so much. It is kind of like the reverse effect of the celebrity endorsement stance you took in "Don't Let the Stars Outshine the Product." When your product doesn't reflect how you are advertising it, it is a disappointment. Great work, can't wait to read more!!
